The Leechburg Area school board will hire a new coach of the high school varsity boy’s basketball team tonight after hazing allegations surfaced earlier this year.
District officials said board members will meet at 7 p.m. for a special meeting.
The allegations came to light in January after a report from a player’s parent to a state child abuse hotline was forwarded to police. A police investigation revealed a trail of ongoing hazing over the last 10 years among team members that involved the use of a yoshi stick as part of an abusive system, often in a sexually suggestive manner.
The school board subsequently decided not to renew the coaching contract of Damian Davies, a high school social studies teacher who had led the basketball team for more than a decade.
