Does College Hazing Defy the Laws It Spawned?

Starting this week, about 20 million students will be arriving on college campuses for the fall semester, and while classrooms fill up, fraternities, sports teams and clubs of all kinds will open their rolls to new students and, inevitably, to initiation rites that can include hazing. Not just embarrassing or humiliating pranks, but physical abuse and serious physical peril, even death.

3 Defendants, Fraternity Challenge Hazing Death Evidence

Three former fraternity brothers and the group itself are challenging evidence in the upcoming criminal trial over a pledge's death during a hazing ritual in the eastern Pennsylvania mountains.

The Pocono Record  reports a Monroe County judge held a hearing Monday on the challenges filed by the former Baruch College fraternity brothers Sheldon Won, Raymond Lam and Kenny Kwan— and the Pi Delta Psi fraternity, itself.

They want the judge to throw out some statements made to police and other evidence. The judge didn't immediately rule.

Miami suspends 2 frats for hazing, alcohol violations

A 3rd suspended frat still in appeals process   Two fraternities at Miami University, Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Kappa Tau, have been suspended following investigations into allegations of hazing and alcohol violations.

A third fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, was also suspended, but its appeals process is currently pending, a university spokesperson said.

Hazing Was Condoned, Former Frat President Testifies In Pledge Death Case

The former president of a New York fraternity chapter linked to a pledge's death during a suspected hazing ritual testified on Monday that his fraternity secretly encouraged hazing.

Daniel Li, 23, of Queens, New York, who faces third-degree murder charges along with four fellow Baruch College Pi Delta Psi fraternity members, was called as a surprise witness in the death of Chun "Michael" Deng.

Li, who testified in Pocono Pines, Pennsylvania District Court before Magisterial District Judge Richard Claypool, said the national office of his former fraternity publicly pretended to condemnhazing by its members.
